‘ It was dark, the only light coming from the full moon. A cool, refreshing breeze caressed the girl’s face, making her long, raven tresses dance. She stood at the very edge of this hidden sanctuary, breathing in the heady scent of rain and wild flowers . In the soft, silvery light, she could make out a strange shape disrupting the smooth, flower speckled grass of the clearing. Was it an animal waiting for a midnight snack? Or worse, a demon? Her heart pounded, loud as thunder in her ears. Suddenly, a soft cry broke the silence, and with a jolt she realized it was an infant. She made to go toward it, but everything went black the moment she took a step forward.’

I woke with a start. I was in my room again, and not in the forest. But the dream had seemed so real! I was, however, still in my bed, in my purple yukata I’d worn to bed the night prior. I’d been in that clearing before. It had been last summer, when a wolf demon had been pursuing me. I went there often now, but I still remembered that day vividly.

‘ He was gaining on me. I had been running for some time, and I could feel my legs begin to give out. As the trees flew by me, small branches managed to nick me from time to time, making my scent trail a trail of blood. This was not good, not at all. I saw a light ahead. A break in the trees!  I burst through, and then felt horror’s icy fingers entwine around my heart when I realized that there was only one entrance to this false sanctuary, and I’d just come through in. I was to deep into the forest for anyone to hear my screams. I did just that when I felt his hot breath on the back of my neck. I whirled, and swung blindly hoping against hope that I would hit something, anything. But he just laughed as he caught my wrist with ease.

“ It’s not nice to hit people, maiden. You should be nicer to me.”

He laughed again, so close even my human nose could pick up his scent. It was the scent of the forest, and the wolves he commanded. He grinned at me, his fangs glinting in the sunlight. The summer breeze swirled around us, and he suddenly stiffened. He turned so fast I did not even see it, and then suddenly, I was on another side of the field, and he was crouching low, growling lowly at the other demon staring coldly at him. This new demon was clearly not a wolf. His silver hair swayed in the breeze, the same color as moonbeams. His skin was just as pale, and was sharply standing out against his all black clothes. He was tall, so tall. His broad shoulders were proudly set, and he stood regally, radiating power and authority. He was of noble blood, such was obvious. This was bad. The more beautiful and human like the demon, the more powerful and dangerous they were. Especially the demon nobles. He glared at the wolf, and if such was possible, the wolf would surely be suffering a thousand painful deaths at that moment. He growled a growl that said ‘don’t mess with me if you know what’s good for you.’  The wolf paid him no heed. He lunged at the prince like demon, who knocked him aside easily. His movements were practiced, fluid. It was like watching a dance of death. Were he was graceful, and precise, the wolf was clumsy, and reckless. He slashed at the wolf with his claws, slicing his side open from his ribs to his hip. The wolf finally gave up, and ran out of the clearing, but not before snarling angrily and us. Finally the demon turned to face me. His face betrayed no emotion, and his deep violet eyes regarded me with disdain. He looked at my kimono, which was surely ruined after the days events. His eyebrow raised minutely. He circled me slowly, as if analyzing me.

“ You are of noble birth? “ He asked, and I could only nod.

“My father served in the army of the demon lord here. He was a captain, the only human that highly ranked in the Lord’s army. He was slain six years ago in battle with my mother.”  His eyes widened so slightly I might not have noticed it.

“Hoshiko Hisoka was your father? “ I felt my own brow raise.

“ You were acquainted with my father? Are you of the Lord’s army as well?”
He snorted lightly at that.

“You could say that. Your name?” I laughed lightly. Apparently father didn’t speak of me often, then?

“ I am Hoshiko, Mizuki. It is a pleasure to meet you....?” I trailed off.

“ Excuse me. I am Akiomaru, Lord of the Western Lands.” I gasped. I was talking to my Lord? I bowed deeply.

“How may I be of service to you, milord?” I asked as I straightened.

“You can allow me to escort you home. Hisoka-sama was a good man, and a great strategist. It would be dishonorable to not protect my subjects. That wolf has been terrorizing my lands long enough. They know not to come into the west without informing me first. He will return to the north shortly, or be dealt with. Come”  With that, he turned, and with more grace and poise than I could ever hope of obtaining, departed the clearing. Looking at it for the first time, I realized just how beautiful it really was. I would have to return again. I stopped at the entrance, removed the jade bracelet I had on, and slipped it onto a small branch, hidden slightly from sight. This would assist me when I returned.'

Grandmother had scolded me for venturing that deep into the woods without an escort from one of my male cousins, but I had not sensed any danger, which I didn’t hesitate to inform her of. She just gave me her ‘ I-don’t-care-what-you-did-and-did-not-sense look ‘. I wisely decided to drop the subject. Lord Akiomaru had disappeared as soon as I was back in my garden, and I had not been able to find him again.
I remembered all this as I slipped into my favorite kimono. It was white silk, and had blood red hibiscus flowers adorning the back, bottom, and sleeves, with a matching red obi to go with it. I quickly brush through my long black hair. My mother had called me ‘little raven’ when I was a child because she said my hair was the same as a raven’s wing. Grandmother and I had lived here in my parent’s manor alone since their deaths six years ago. As usual, Grandmother was up before me, though I rose at dawn each morning. She was in the garden, meditating. Before she had married my grandfather and had my mother, and her twin brother, she had been a powerful miko (Shinto priestess). My mother had been one until she had me, and I was one as well (mikos lose their holy power when they have their first child).
“Ohayoo (good morning) Grandmother. I trust you slept well?” She opened her solemn, wise eyes and smiled warmly at me. She may be elderly, but to me her beauty was timeless. Her hair had long since faded from raven’s black to silver, and her once smooth face was marred with wrinkles, and crinkles, but they only enhanced her natural beauty.
“Ohayoo, Mizuki-chan. I slept quite well, thank you. But I don’t believe you were so fortunate. Come and tell me about it. What troubles you?”  She always knew when something was amiss. I came and sat next to her, sitting like she says a lady should. Even though my legs get numb, and sitting up so straight really hurts after awhile. The Sakura (cherry blossom) trees around us were in full bloom, giving the whole garden a very relaxing, soothing scent. As the sun’s early light warmed us and erased the last traces of sleep from our bodies, I told her of my dream. She sat in silence with a thoughtful expression on her face. Although she was but a human, she had as much wisdom as any demon ancient. When she told you something, you listened. It was simply done without question. She nodded accordingly as I told my tale, and when I finished, she contemplated something for a few moments.

“Can you describe the infant? Think hard. Focus on the infant, and it’s aura.” I nodded and closed my eyes. Using my miko training, I easily pulled the image to the forefront of my mind. I concentrated on the babe and it’s aura, and gasped. It couldn’t be! Impossible!
“Grandmother! It was a youkai (demon) pup! Why would I dream of a demon’s pup?” She gave me a mischievous smile.
“Ah, but who ever said that was a dream? You are a miko, you have the gift of foresight, as our family has always had. And also, Youkai can send visions to those they wish to become caretakers to their pups. You should go investigate this tonight, Mizuki. The moon is in it’s full phase on this night, as in your dream. It is a great honor to be chosen for something such as this, child.” She gazed at me proudly and I flushed.

We spent the rest of the day preparing for the pup. We set up a nursery in the room next to mine. I was technically the Lady of the House now, so I slept in my parent’s old room. My own was were we put the nursery because it was connected by two big doors to my current one. We set up a table with infant’s kimonos and diapers near the cradle. The cradle was ancient, said to be a gift from the former demon lord of the west, to my ancestors a thousand years ago. Beautiful demonesses were intricately carved into the wood, smiling brilliantly, holding their own pups in there arms. They covered the inside and outside of the walls, dressed in beautiful blues, greens, reds, purples, whites, with cranes, dogs, koi fish, and various other animals and symbols decorating their traditional 12 layer kimonos. Because demons are usually born in litters, the cradle was very spacious. This was why it had been the gift chosen to give to my family, since twins were blatantly in my blood line ( I was the first non twin child in over six generations, on my mothers side).

Dusk, in all it’s other worldly beauty came upon us all to quickly. Since the incident last summer with that wolf, I’d gotten my cousins Taro and Akira, my mother’s brother’s sons, to train me with a katana. Said katana was strapped securely to my obi. Stretching my senses around me for any ill-willed demons, I bid Grandmother goodbye.

I had made the trip to and fro many times since my run in with Lord Akiomaru, so I was able to navigate the forest fairly quickly in the growing darkness. It did not take me long to reach it, and it was just as it had been in my dream. The same soft silver light, the same strange shape, although I was not frightened, as I had been before. The pup started crying, and I completely forgot to check the field for anyone other than ourselves.
The pup appeared to be a few months old, and had a cute little tuft of silver hair on her head. Thank the kami(Japanese spirits) that the pup was female. She stopped crying the moment I scooped her up. She was wrapped in all purple silk. Purple was the color of royalty. It was when she looked up at me with shining violet eyes, that it clicked. She was Akiomaru-sama’s pup! I looked up, and spun in a circle looking for him. He was behind me, and he was wounded.
“Akiomaru-sama! What happened, are you alright?” I exclaimed, rushing over to him. He gave me a look that said ‘ do I look alright to you?! ‘ but he answered me none the less.
“ My palace was attacked by assassins two days ago. It was an attempt at my pup’s lives. My mate was killed, and I barely escaped with this pup. Her elder siblings were not so lucky. I could think of no one that would respond to me but you. You must take her now, I will return for her when it is safe for her once again. Do you accept?”  I nodded and bowed as much as I could with a pup in my arms. A pup that was currently chewing on my hair.
“ I am deeply sorry for the loss of the Lady and your pups, Milord. You are always safe at my manor. My uncles homes as well. Will you fare well from here?”
“Yes, yes, now go! The pup is called Fuyuai (which in Japanese means  'winter love’ ) I turned and jogged lightly with Fuyuai in my arms back toward the manor. I knew just like Grandmother knew that things would never be the same again.
okay, well, this was based on a prompt that we had to do in my english class. I'll only continue it if enough people comment. if not, it stays a one shot, kk?
